[fɔs], Golf von Fos, Bucht an der französischen Mittelmeerküste, zwischen Rhônemündung und Marseille, bis 11 km breit, durch eine Nehrung zum Teil abgeriegelt. Mitte der 1960er-Jahre entstanden als Hauptmaßnahme des sechsten französischen Wirtschaftsplans (Ziel: Industrialisierung Südfrankreichs) bei der kleinen Hafenstadt Fos-sur-Mer (11 600 Einwohner) ein Schwerindustriekomplex mit Stahlwerk, Gießerei und Walzstraße, eine Aluminiumhütte und ein Erdölhafen mit Raffinerien und petrochemische Industrie sowie ein Tiefwasserhafen (bis 21,5 m tief) mit Hafenanlagen für Containerumschlag, Erze, Kohle, chemische Produkte; Kanal zum Étang de Berre; Erdöl-, Erdgas- und Produktenleitungen besonders nach Norden (Karlsruhe, Genf u. a.). - In dem Städtchen Fos-sur-Mer sind mittelalterliche Befestigungsanlagen und eine romanische Kirche erhalten. G. Jaubert errichtete 1968 die »Tour de Vigie Port Pétrolier«, einen Lagertank, der gleichzeitig Besucherturm ist; ebenfalls von Jaubert wurde das »Centre Aéré« (1975-77) erbaut.
